Abkhazia, officially the Republic of Abkhazia is a de facto state located within the nation of Georgia; most nations recognise Abkhazia as part of Georgia, whom itself views the region as an autonomous republic. The region has strong ties to Russia, who officially recognised Abkhazia as a state in 2008; that same year, Georgia officially declared Abkhazia as a Russian-occupied territory, a view shared by most members of the United Nations. Venezuela, Nicaragua, Nauru, and Syria also recognise Abkhazia as a state.
