Afghanistan (officially the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan) is an Asian sovereign state known mostly in the West as being one of the countries targeted by the United States and NATO in the aftermath of the 9/11 World Trade Center terrorist attack. It is bordered by Pakistan, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and China. The United States withdrew all military personnel in 2021; as a result of this, the Taliban, the previous functioning government of Afghanistan, has once again taken control of the country.
