After Burner II is a third-person, rail shooter, flight simulator arcade game released by Sega in 1987. It is the sequel to After Burner and the second game in the After Burner series, although it was more of an upgrade of the original game, with additional features such as a throttle to control the speed and new levels.
The Japanese Sega Mega Drive version supported the XE-1AP analog thumbstick controller.

In the December 1987 issue of Computer and Video Games, Clare Edgeley reviewed the arcade version, praising the new features as a welcome addition, particularly the throttle which controls the speed and works similarly to "a gear stick" in racing games. She also praised the improved graphics, including the addition of "night scenes" and landing strips where "tankers trundle out to refuel and ground crew patch up the damage." She stated it is a "great game" that comes in three models, the upright cabinet, the "Commander" sit-down cabinet with "two-way cockpit rotation" and the "Super Deluxe" sit-down cabinet "which features all mod-cons and four-way cockpit motion" and is "a hell of a ride."[4]
