Cars Toons: Mater's Tall Tales is a video game based on the short series of the same name.
Gameplay[ | ]
In the game, players can create their own car, whom they play as in all the games. They can use coins they earn from playing to buy new parts for their car.
The game is divided into two modes: Tall Tales Mode and Free Play Mode. In Tall Tales Mode, players can choose to play among six stories: Rescue Squad Mater, Mater the Greater, El Materdor, Tokyo Mater, Unidentified Flying Mater and Monster Truck Mater, each one based off of one of the Mater's Tall Tales shorts and divided into five levels. Each level requires the player to rank up enough points to earn them a bronze, silver or gold trophy and a specific amount of coins. Doing so will unlock the level in Free Play Mode.
The game portrays the stories as if Mater was telling the player's car about the time he told the story to Lightning, then eventually includes them in his story, like he did with Lightning in the shorts.
Tall Tales Mode requires the player to finish all five levels in a set order while Free Play Mode allows them to play each level as a stand a lone.
Trivia[ | ]
- Several scenes from the shorts are used in the game as cut-scenes. Strangely, a scene from Unidentified Flying Mater appears during one of the Mater the Greater levels.
- The game does not feature stories based off of Heavy Metal Mater, Moon Mater or Mater Private Eye, which were released at the time the game was.
