DC Universe Online is a massively multiplayer online role playing game set in the DC Comics universe. The game was first introduced with a subscription-only model, that required users to pay a monthly fee in order to play the game, without microtransactions.
In November 2011, it was announced that the game would now be free-to-play, with an optional subscription for additional content. Free-to-play users are restricted to 6 characters, a limited inventory, and no downloadable content. Two other subscriptions are also available.
- Premium - Which is automatically activated once the player spends a set amount in micro-transactions, or has an expired Legendry subscription. This subscription cannot be purchased directly. Premium users, unlike Free-to-play users, are able to purchase and use DLC.
- Legendary - A monthly subscription that grants 16 character slots, an uncapped in-game wallet, and free access to all DLC. DLC expires along with the user's membership.
A version for the PlayStation 4 was announced in June 2013, and released in November 2013. In February 2015, the Daybreak Game Company was acquired by Columbus Nova, with the president speculating that an Xbox One version may be available at a later date.
