DVD-ROM is the most common implementation of the DVD standard that gamers will see, and is the second generation of optical media released to consumers, superseding CD-ROM. The Xbox, Xbox 360, GameCube made extensive use of the DVD-ROM standard, and later consoles, such as the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One would include functionality to read DVD-ROM and HD-ROM discs.

Nintendo reverse-engineered the DVD standard for the Wii, and uses a modified variant called the Wii Optical Disc.
