Dante is one of the main protagonists of the Devil May Cry series, and a playable character in all entries of the franchise. The son of a benevolent demon and human woman, Dante works as a private investigator and demon hunter dedicated to protecting humanity from demonic forces.

Characterization[ | ]

Concept[ | ]

Dante was named after Italian poet Dante Allighieri, whose work The Divine Comedy is a recurring source of inspiration for the franchise.

Appearance[ | ]

Dante's appearance varies across games, but a number of elements remain constant. He is tall and muscular, with blue eyes and silver-white hair. His attire generally consists of a red trench coat at the very least, with red being a prominent color in his design.

Dante's facial modeling in Devil May Cry 5 was provided by British model Adam Cowie.

Personality[ | ]

Dante is cocky and wise-cracking, often taunting his enemies in battle and rarely flinching in the face of danger. Despite his demonic powers, Dante values his humanity and sees it as a strength that most demons lack.

Abilities[ | ]

Owing to his demonic heritage, Dante has a plethora of superhuman abilities. His strength, agility, stamina, reflexes and pain tolerance exceed human capability, and he has repeatedly brushed off lethal injuries (including impalement).

Beyond his supernatural powers, Dante is a master combatant, showing skill with numerous weapons and forms of combat.

Gameplay[ | ]

Starting from Devil May Cry 3, Dante can switch between four "Styles", each of which hold a different moveset. "Trickster" increases his speed and evasiveness; "Gunslinger" opens up new firearm abilities; "Swordmaster" expands his melee combat moveset; and "Royalguard" allows for defensive combat, storing up energy from enemy attacks before redirecting it outwards.
