Dark Salvation is a gothic horror first-person shooter computer game created by Mangled Eye Studios released on July 28, 2009 for Microsoft Windows. The game follows the story of Talia, a young woman whose family is killed in the service of the demon Lucafix. After being trapped in his realm, she becomes possessed by the Spirit Crystal, and must use its powers to escape from the underworld.
Gameplay[ | ]
The way the game is played is in a manner similar to most other first-person shooters, meaning you have to battle against hordes of monsters while solving puzzles and avoiding traps. The game is seen from Talia's perspective, as in most character based first person shooters. The game allows players to battle through fourteen large levels using ten different weapons, each with the ability to cast their own spells.[1]
Development[ | ]
The original idea behind Dark Salvation was created by Thearrel McKinney in 1999, with the goal of creating a mod that added an extra tier to Quake III Arena. This eventually morphed into the creation of a stand-alone single player game.[2] Work began on what would become the final game in 2003 after Mangled Eye Studios acquired a license from id Software to use the then proprietary id Tech 3 engine,[3] with the goal of taking "you back to the days of old school FPS shooters with its single player fast action game play."[4] The development of the games soundtrack was handled by thirteen different bands, with their work being showcased full-length on its own separate disk included with the Limited Unrated Dual-Disc Edition.[5] Talia was voiced by Jessica Eastwood, who died shortly before the release of the game.[6]
Reception[ | ]
The game has received largely positive comments on Mod DB,[7] Voodoo Extreme,[8] and Shacknews.[9] The game has been compared to Painkiller, Heretic, Blood, and Kiss: Psycho Circus: The Nightmare Child.[10][11]
