Darkstalkers has ten playable characters a sub-boss, Huitzil, and the games final boss Pyron. Many of Darkstalkers features are based off Capcom's Street Fighter II series and expanded on. Blocking is now available in air and combos are easier to chain. EX attacks allow the player to use stronger and or faster versions of special attacks at the price of using up some of their special meter. Super combos similar to the Street Fighter II series are used and known as ES attacks. ES attacks require the special gauge to be full and unlike the Street Fighter II series, once the special gauge reaches full, it will slowly drain.

Characters in Darkstalkers can also dash forward or back-step. Some dashes have special properties. Morrigan Aensland can dash upwards at an angle while Demitri Maximoff turns slightly invulnerable. Anakaris can dash backwards from the edge of the screen to the other. Lord Raptor has the ability to walk forward while crouching.
