Dixie Kong (ディクシーコング, Dikushī Kongu) is a recurring character in the Donkey Kong franchise. She is a Kong recognizable for her long blonde hair and a pink beret. She is the girlfriend of Diddy Kong, the older sister of Tiny Kong, and the cousin of Kiddy Kong and Chunky Kong. Tiny first appears in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest as the sidekick of Diddy Kong and returns in Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! as the main protagonist, a role that she also has in Donkey Kong Land III.
Main appearances[]
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest[]
In Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, Dixie is the second playable character. She joins Diddy on a journey to save Donkey Kong from Kaptain K. Rool. Dixie's main gameplay difference from Diddy Kong is that she can perform a maneuver known as the Helicopter Spin, in which she rotates her ponytail around, allowing her to glide certain distances and to slow her descent. She can enter Dixie Barrels if she is the Kong in the lead, much like Diddy with Diddy Barrels.
In her idle animations, Dixie is seen chewing bubble gum and slurping a drink from a straw. If she is on a honey wall, she can be seen licking the honey. If Dixie breaks an End of Level Target, she plays a blue electric guitar for a few seconds.
In the Two Player Contest mode, Dixie's clothing is purple and her hair is red.
Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble![]
Dixie returned as the main character in the sequel, Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!. Her sidekick is her cousin Kiddy Kong, whom Funky Kong provides to Dixie during her first visit to Funky's Rentals. Together, Dixie and Kiddy explore the Northern Kremisphere in search of Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong, who have both gone missing while exploring the Northern Kremisphere.
Dixie is more agile and lightweight than Kiddy, allowing her to run faster and perform longer jumps. However, compared to Kiddy, she lacks the brute strength required to break certain floors or obstacles by throwing her partner.
Dixie retains her purple clothing in the Two Player Contest mode, except her ponytail is still blonde. The palette can be accessed outside of Two Player Contest if the player enters inputs the cheat code "COLOR" on the main menu.
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze[]
In Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Dixie is one of three Kongs who can accompany Donkey Kong, appearing alongside Diddy Kong and Cranky Kong. She can be freed from a DX Barrel, which bears her pink "DX" initials. Unlike in previous titles, Dixie cannot use her ponytail to glide using the Helicopter Spin, it provides a brief boost in vertical height. She can also use her ponytail to strike enemies or move more swiftly through underwater sections against strong currents using the Ponytail Propeller technique. If she and Donkey Kong use KONG Pow together, every enemy transforms into a Golden Heart. During co-op or Hard Mode, Dixie utilizes the Bubblegum Popgun, a ranged weapon that fires gumballs capable of striking enemies from a distance.
In an idle animation, Dixie is seen playing the air guitar.
Spinoff appearances[]
Donkey Kong Land series[]
Donkey Kong Land 2[]
Donkey Kong Land 2 serves as a retelling of Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. In this version, Dixie joins Diddy on a journey to rescue Donkey Kong from Kaptain K. Rool on Crocodile Isle.
Donkey Kong Land III[]
In Donkey Kong Land III, Dixie is involved in a unique plot rather than a retelling of a home console game. She and Kiddy Kong enter a contest to discover the Lost World. They decide to join the search after Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong underestimate their abilities and leave them behind.
DK series[]
DK: King of Swing[]
In DK: King of Swing, Dixie is playable only in Jungle Jam mode, where she is playable from the start. Dixie has a maximum jump stat but minimal attack power.
DK: Jungle Climber[]
In DK: Jungle Climber, Dixie is playable in multiplayer mode. She is also seen in a few cutscenes of story mode.
Diddy Kong Racing DS[]
In Diddy Kong Racing DS, Dixie is one of three playable Kongs, alongside Diddy Kong and Tiny Kong. Dixie replaces Conker the Squirrel from the original Nintendo 64 game Diddy Kong Racing.
Donkey Kong Barrel Blast[]
Dixie appears as a playable racer in Donkey Kong Barrel Blast. She has very acceleration and handling, although her maximum speed is slightly below average. When attacking, Dixie spins her ponytail vertically.
Mario appearances[]
Mario Baseball series[]
Mario Superstar Baseball[]
In Mario Superstar Baseball, Dixie is one of three playable Kongs, alongside Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong. She wields a thick branch while batting, with the contact "sweet spot" being in the center of the stick. Dixie's ability is Clamber, which allows her to scale walls and catch the ball, preventing any potential home runs. A character of the Technique type, Dixie functions as a defensive specialist with above-average fielding and running, but her batting strength is tied with Baby Luigi and Toadette for the lowest compared to other characters.
Dixie is one of the unlockable characters. The player can unlock her by completing Challenge mode with Donkey Kong's team, on which Dixie is a member of by default.
Mario Super Sluggers[]
In Mario Super Sluggers, Dixie is one of many characters available on the default roster. Her batting power receives a slight buff—removing her from the bottom rank—but her pitching ability is heavily downgraded to one of the worst in the roster. Despite this, she remains the fastest member of the Kong family.
Dixie shares good chemistry with her fellow primates Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Tiny Kong, Funky Kong, and Baby Donkey Kong, as well as the Pink Mii. Conversely, Dixie holds negative chemistry with the Kremling antagonists King K. Rool and Kritter, as well as the undead Dry Bones.
In Challenge mode, Dixie appears as a non-playable character in vicinity of DK Jungle. She can be recruited by winning against Dark Bones in either the "Steal a home run with a buddy jump!" or "Throw different pitches!" battle missions and then recovering a piece of the stone tablet.
Dixie's "Rookie Year" is listed as 1995 on her digital Mario Super Sluggers collectible card, a nod to her debut in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, a video game released that year.
Mario Hoops 3-on-3[]
In the Nintendo DS title Mario Hoops 3-on-3, Dixie Kong acts as an unlockable character defined by high agility, categorizing her as a "Speed" type similar to Diddy Kong. Her gameplay is highlighted by her Special Shot, the Cannon Shot. This technique involves a visual sequence where she spins to summon a barrel cannon from the sky, performs a backflip off the device, and launches the ball into the hoop amidst a burst of red explosions and confetti.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie[]
In the Super Mario Bros. Movie, Dixie makes a cameo appearance in the crowd during the battle between Donkey Kong and Mario.
In other media[]
Donkey Kong Country television series[]
Dixie Kong is a recurring supporting character in the animated Donkey Kong Country television series. She even owns a pet Lobster.
Nintendo Monopoly[]
Dixie also appears in Nintendo Monopoly, where she represents the yellow property comparable to Atlantic Avenue.
Crossover appearances[]
Super Smash Bros. series[]
Dixie Kong has been featured as a collectible trophy in several games within the Super Smash Bros. series, including Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.
In an interview with Famitsu in 2008, Masahiro Sakurai said that Dixie and Diddy were intended to be a tag-team fighter in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. However, Diddy would ultimately become a standalone fighter, without Dixie, because the developers encountered technical issues.
Physical appearance[]
Dixie's design has remained fairly consistent across her appearances. Her defining features include her long blonde ponytail as well as the sleeveless pink top and pink beret that she wears. In early games, Dixie's cap depicted the Rare logo, but this detail was removed in later titles after Rare became a first-party developer for Xbox Game Studios, starting in Donkey Konga 3. Dixie also used to wear pink kneepads, but since Donkey Konga 3: All You Can Eat! Spring 50 Song Mix, they have been excluded from her design. Dixie usually has pink toenails.
The Donkey Kong Country television show features the most drastic change to Dixie's appearance compared to other titles. She wears a differently colored outfit and has yellow fur, though her trademark pink cap remains unchanged.
Personality[]
Dixie has a lively and cheerful personality, which is the most evident in the Donkey Kong Country television series. Here, Dixie's friendliness is shown not only from her support for Donkey Kong and her friendship with Candy Kong but also her friendship with General Klump in the episode "Klump's Lumps."
However, in the second and third installments of both the Donkey Kong Country and Donkey Kong Land series, Dixie cries if she is defeated by an enemy and is without her partner. In Donkey Kong Country 2 and Donkey Kong Country 3 only, Dixie also cries if she hits the ground after her partner does a team up throw.
Abilities[]
Dixie Kong's most defining physical characteristic is her long, golden ponytail, which allows her to perform air maneuvers, such as gliding or brief vertical boosts, depending on the game. The gliding ability is required sometimes, such as a large pit at the start of Stampede Sprint in Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!. Dixie usually uses her ponytail to pick up objects like barrels and even a type of enemy, Click-Clacks. Dixie's younger sister, Tiny, uses her ponytail in a similar manner in Donkey Kong 64, a game which Dixie does not appear in.
Dixie has some advantages compared to Diddy and Kiddy. In Donkey Kong Country 2, Dixie can jump slightly higher than Diddy, and she can perform a higher team up throw than Diddy can to her. In Donkey Kong Country 3, Dixie also moves faster than Kiddy due to his weight.
Conversely, Dixie also has some disadvantages compared to Diddy and Kiddy. In Donkey Kong Country 2, Dixie moves slower than Diddy, including from running and climbing ropes. In Donkey Kong Country 3, she struggles to carry Kiddy when doing a team up.
In Donkey Kong Country 3, if Dixie throws Kiddy against the ground, he curls up and starts to roll. Dixie can then jump on Kiddy to ride him, utilizing a mechanic reminiscent of Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong riding Steel Barrels the original Donkey Kong Country.
Naming[]
During the pre-production phase of Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, the developers at Rare cycled through a variety of potential names to establish a feminine counterpart to Diddy Kong. Early concept materials reveal a list of rejected monikers that relied heavily on alliteration, including Dee Dee King, Didiane, Daisy, Dandi, Dolly, and Dizzie.
The final selection, "Dixie," represents a deviation from the standard naming conventions of the Kong clan. Unlike characters such as Cranky, Funky, or Tiny, whose names are derived from English adjectives that explicitly describe a physical attribute or personality quirk, "Dixie" lacks a direct descriptive meaning regarding her traits. While the word technically exists in English slang as a term for a cooking pot, the name was likely selected for its phonetic symmetry with "Diddy," establishing a rhythmic connection between the two protagonists.
