Over the course of various updates to the PlayStation 3, the DualShock 4 Controller can be used with it in either wired or wireless configuration.
Absent features[ | ]
The following features of DualShock 4 cannot be used on the PlayStation 3 without the use of third party accessories.
- SIXAXIS Motion.
- Vibration.

Wired Configuration Guide[ | ]
- Plug the DualShock 4 into the PlayStation 3 via USB.
- Turn on the PlayStation 3 and then hit the
button on the Dualshock 4 Controller. - Make sure your DualShock 4 Controller is assigned as Controller 1.
- Lastly, turn on your PlayStation 3 Controller and make sure it's assigned as Controller 2. In certain games' menus, you will need to use on this controller before you can use your DualShock 4.
Wireless Configuration Guide[ | ]
- Ensure the PlayStation 3 is off or on standby.
- Plug the DualShock 4 Controller into your PlayStation 3 via USB.
- Turn on the PlayStation 3 and then hit the button on the DualShock 4 Controller.
- Make sure your DualShock 4 Controller is assigned as Controller 1.
- Lastly, turn on your PlayStation 3 Controller and make sure it's assigned as Controller 2 for the same reasons as earlier.
- Go to Accessory Settings, then Manage Bluetooth Devices.
- Unplug the DualShock 4 Controller.
- Start scanning for Bluetooth devices.
- Press the and buttons together simultaneously until the lightbar on the front of the DualShock 4 Controller is flashing rapidly; this indicates that it has been paired to the PlayStation 3.
- Plug the DualShock 4 Controller back in and select Wireless Controller.
- Once the PlayStation 3 has paired with the DualShock 4 Controller, you can unplug it and use it wirelessly.
