A view of Earth from space. Called "The Blue Marble", it is the most widely used photograph of Earth. It was taken by the crew of Apollo 17 in 1972.
Earth is a planet in the Sol system, commonly accepted to be the third planet from the star of the same name. The majority species is homo sapiens, known collectively as humanity, or human in singular. As of 2021, the planet is populated by approximate 7.8 billion humans, and has one natural satellite, Luna. The planet is currently undergoing its sixth mass extinction event due to climactic effects caused by the industrial development of humanity, in what has been unofficially termed the Anthropocene Era of the Earth's geological history that began in the eighteenth centiry.
