Excitebike was one of the sports titles for the Nintendo Entertainment System developed by Nintendo. It launched with the NES in the United States alongside other sports titles such as Tennis, Baseball and Golf. The game resembles motorcross, with players competing against several computer controlled racers through various hills, jumps and puddles.

A Turbo can be used while racing, but using it for too long will cause the player's engine to overheat, costing the player valuable seconds. Oddly enough, the player doesn't win by passing a set amount of opponents, but by completing a course in a set amount of time.

Innovation

A rarely seen feature at the time included in Excitebike was the ability to edit and save one's own custom courses. Although loading often took quite a while, the save system was effective for what it was. There has been recent talk that the save system stored information through sound frequencies. Adding to this theory; if one listens closely to a speaker while a course is loading, they can hear small "blips" and other sounds.

Excitebike was a United States launch title for the Nintendo Entertainment system, therefore many American carts have Japanese roms inside of them, with a Famicom to NES adapter connecting the board to the pins in the NES. It is because of this, it is possible for one to open up an Excitebike cart, and take out the pin adapter for use as a Famicom to NES game adapter.

Other Appearences

Excitebike can be unlocked in the Nintendo Gamecube title, Animal Crossing, as well as the Nintendo 64 title Excitebike 64. The game was also released in e-Reader format. In addition, Excitebikers appear as an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, in their 8-bit forms.
