Game Freak is a Japanese game developer responsible for the main line of Pokémon games. It was established as a game company by designer Satoshi Tajiri on April 26, 1989. The name comes from Satoshi Tajiri's hand-made game magazine that he created when he was 18.

Their first game was published by Namco and Hudson Soft for the NES in 1989, called Mendel Palace (Quinty in Japan). Since then, Game Freak has been making Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance games almost exclusively, an only exception being the little-known Sega Genesis platformer called Pulseman. In 2005, They released their first non-Pokémon game in over a decade, a Game Boy Advance platformer Drill Dozer.
