Horror video games refer to video games that are in the horror genre. Horror video games are meant to have much darker tones than standard video games, and include common elements such as jumpscares, general feeling of unease, poor lighting, gruesome deaths, and may feature enemies such as the occult, ghosts and spirits, monsters, demons, aliens, cryptids, and other supernatural entities. There are a few different types of horror games:
- Survival horror - The main objective is to complete the game by surviving.
- Psychological horror - A subgenre where the game aims to mess with the player's mind by affecting mental, emotional, and psychological states.
