Il Piantissimo made his debut in Super Mario Sunshine in 2002. He seems to be a normal human who wears a purple Pianta mask, gloves, and boots.
In Super Mario Sunshine, Il Piantissimo has collected some of the Shine Sprites that have left the Shine Gate at Delfino Plaza. Much like Koopa the Quick, Mario runs into Il Piantissimo at several locations around Isle Delfino. Il Piantissimo then challenges Mario to a race. If Mario wins, Il Piantissimo gives him a Shine Sprite.
When his Pianta helmet is removed (using forms of AR and other editing/hacking tools) he looks very similar to the Running Man from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
