Knuckles the Echidna is from the Sonic franchise. He was introduced in the game Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Sonic 3 in Europe) as a rival for Sonic, similar to how Shadow the Hedgehog was introduced in later games. He has the ability to punch walls thanks to the spikes on his knuckles, and he can also glide. When Knuckles glides into a wall, he can use his knuckles to latch onto it, allowing the player to climb.
After briefly being against Sonic, Knuckles learned that he was not the enemy and they became friendly rivals. He co-stars in the game Sonic & Knuckles.
In game Sonic 3 & Knuckles which can be only be played with the lock-on technology in the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge, by attaching the Sonic 3 cartridge to the top; in this version of the game, it is possible to jump behind item monitors and spikes, and also glide through objects with Knuckles.
