| ~ Luigi, Mario Kart 64. |
Luigi is one of the main characters in the Mario franchise. He is the younger and taller brother of Mario. Luigi first appears in Mario Bros. for the Game & Watch, in which he assists Mario in a bottling factory, but his first major appearance is in the arcade title of the same title. Luigi is a palette swap of Mario controlled by the second player in some of his early major appearances, like the arcade title Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, and Super Mario World.
Luigi has been given a distinct role in the series and has starred in his own video game, called Luigi's Mansion. He is a staple of the Mario universe, being included in every Mario sports game, and was even given his own rival, Waluigi, to compare to Mario's Wario. It has also been hinted that Luigi has romantic connections with Daisy, princess of Sarasaland, giving Luigi an equivalent to Peach.
Appearance[]
Luigi's established appearance depicts him as slightly taller and thinner than Mario. His outfit consists of blue overalls, a green long-sleeved shirt, brown shoes, and a green cap with an "L" symbol. Luigi's mustache is also slightly different, and his voice pitch is higher than Mario.
In the arcade title Mario Bros., Luigi's overalls and cap are green instead, and his shirt is black. In the Nintendo Entertainment System version, both his shirt and cap are white.
In the original Super Mario Bros., Luigi wears a green shirt over white overalls as well as a white cap. Since Super Mario World, the Fire Luigi form has been standardized to have green overalls over a white shirt. When touching a Fire Flower, Luigi wears the same red clothes as Fire Mario in the same game. In the remake Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, the palette of Luigi's sprites were made consistent with his standardized colors, as his Small and Super forms depict him as wearing green overalls over a brown shirt and a green cap, while Luigi's Fire form utilizes the sprites for Super Luigi in the original Super Mario Bros.
Abilities[]
Luigi's abilities are usually identical to Mario. In some games he has better jumping and speed, but less traction, strength, and slower acceleration. In the Luigi's Mansion series, Luigi gets a Poltergust device, a superpowered vacuum cleaner designed for capturing ghosts.
Personality[]
In earlier games, Luigi was portrayed as living in his brother's shadow and did not receive the recognition Mario did. With the release of Luigi's Mansion, however, Luigi received his own spotlight, which shed more light on his personality: his fear of ghosts and general apprehension of the dark. In the Mario & Luigi series, Luigi is used more as a comic relief character, often being forgotten and left behind, or has little impression on other characters. He is also portrayed as being unlucky and accident-prone in most of his official artwork.
History[]
Mario Bros. series[]
Mario Bros. (Game & Watch)[]
Luigi's first appearance is in Mario Bros., in which he works at a bottling factory with Mario.
Mario Bros. (arcade)[]
In the arcade title Mario Bros., Luigi is controlled by the second player only, and he helps Mario fight off enemies they encounter in the sewers of Brooklyn.
Super Mario series[]
Super Mario Bros.[]
Luigi joins Mario on the journey to rescue Princess Toadstool in Super Mario Bros. He is playable by only the second player in the alternating two-player mode.
Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels[]
Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels is the first game in which Luigi had distinctive traits from Mario, as the game gives him a high jumping ability. As the game is single-player only, Luigi can be played as by the first player for the first time, by selecting "Luigi Game" on the title screen instead of "Mario Game."
Super Mario Bros. 2[]
In Super Mario Bros. 2, Luigi is one of four playable characters. Luigi has the highest jumps of the four characters, but he has low traction and is not very strong at uprooting vegetables like Toad. He replaces Mama from the original version, Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic.
The game marks the first instance where Luigi has a different appearance than Mario, excluding palette swaps. It is also the first game in which he is depicted wearing green overalls over a blue shirt.
Super Mario Bros. 3[]
In Super Mario Bros. 3, Luigi has been relegated back to being the second player's character.
Super Mario World[]
In Super Mario World, Luigi is again the second player's character.
New Super Mario Bros.[]
In New Super Mario Bros., players can play as Luigi in the single-player game by holding the L + R buttons when selecting a save file. Luigi is also one of the playable characters in the Mario vs. Luigi mode.
Trivia[]
- In The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, Luigi was portrayed by Danny Wells.
- His name is rumored to have come from a pizza parlor nearby the then-new Redmond, Washington headquarters of Nintendo of America called "Mario and Luigi's."
