Mac OS X 10.2 "Jaguar" is the third major release of OS X, an operating system made by Apple Inc. It was released on August 23, 2002 for either single-computer installations or in a "family pack" of five separate installations on different computers in one household. Mac OS X 10.2 was the first release of OS X to publicly use its code name in marketing and advertisements. It is preceded by Mac OS X 10.1 "Puma" and succeeded by Mac OS X 10.3 "Panther".
Features[ | ]
Mac OS X Jaguar introduced MPEG-4 support in Apple's QuickTime multimedia framework, Address Book, Inkwell for handwriting recognition, and Apple mail. It also included the first release of Apple's zero-configuration networking implementation, Rendezvous (now Bonjour), which allows devices over a network to discover each other and display available services to the user, such as file sharing, shared scanners, and printers.
Quartz Extreme (now Quartz Compositor) debuted in Jaguar, used to composite graphics directly on the video card, increase interface responsiveness and performance. Universal Access was also added to allow Macs to be usable by disabled computer users.
The famous Happy Mac that greeted Mac users for almost 18 years during the Mac startup sequence was replaced with a large grey Apple logo in this version onwards.
