Marquis de Hoto is one of the two main characters of the point-and-click adventure game The Night of the Rabbit. He is an anthropomorphized upright albino rabbit wearing a coat who is a "Treewalker" and uses a magic spell to travel between parallel universes.
Throughout The Night of the Rabbit[]
He is first introduced to the protagonist, Jeremiah Hazelnut, when he appears out of nowhere in response to Jerry's creation of a "carrot flame" recipe. He offers Jerry the opportunity to become his apprentice and travel to a parallel universe to learn magic and become a true Treewalker.
Throughout the game, he acts as a mentor and guide for Jerry, teaching him about "portal trees" and the different worlds they can access. However, it is revealed that the Marquis had a dark past as the last apprentice of the evil magician Zaroff, and that he had become corrupted by darkness.
He is revealed to be the memory of the real Marquis de Hoto, who had been sent by the First Tree to train a new apprentice in order to combat Zaroff's rise.
At the end of the story, the Marquis is forced to stay behind at the First Tree and Jerry promises to never forget him.
