Microsoft Corporation is an American technology company headquartered in Redmond, Washington, United States. It is best known for its Windows line of operating systems and Xbox video game consoles.

The company was founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen on April 4, 1975, and rose to dominate the personal computer operating system market with MS-DOS in the mid-1980s, followed by Microsoft Windows.

Microsoft entered the home console market in November 2001 with the Xbox.
