Mini-games refer to a feature or game mode within a video game that offers quick, shorten games with simplistic controls and either ends when an objective is completed, or the timer runs out. They break up the normal pace of a video game and may test a player's skill in certain areas. Mini-games can be either single-player or multi-player, with some games allowing for bots to fill in for missing players.
Board-based party games such as the Mario Party series and Wii Party, commonly rely on mini-games as part of their gameplay loop, breaking up board gameplay with mini-games. The winner(s) of a mini-game normally receives an award that will help them as they traverse the board.
Depending on the game, there may be a mode included for players to strictly play minigames that are separate from the main game. An example of this includes Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards and Pokรฉmon Stadium.
A game that consists of only mini-games is considered a genre itself and is normally known as a mini-game compilation. An example of this type of game is Fuzion Frenzy.
