Oculus Rift is a discontinued virtual reality head-mounted display developed and manufactured by Oculus VR, a division of Facebook Inc. Released on March 28, 2016, it has since been discontinued and succeeded by the Oculus Rift S, scheduled for a spring 2019 release.
Oculus initiated a Kickstarter campaign to fund the Rift's development in 2012 after being founded as an independent company two months prior. The project raised almost US$2.5 million from around 10,000 contributors. In March 2014, Facebook purchased Oculus for US$2 billion, and in March 2017 it was announced Oculus founder and creator Palmer Luckey was leaving Facebook.
