The Oculus Rift is a discontinued virtual reality head-mounted display developed and manufactured by Oculus VR, a division of Facebook Inc. Released on March 28, 2016, it has since been discontinued and is planned to be succeeded by the Oculus Rift S, scheduled for a spring 2019 release.

Oculus initiated a Kickstarter campaign to fund the Rift's development in 2012 after being founded as an independent company two months prior. The project raised almost US$2.5 million from around 10,000 backers. In March 2014, Facebook purchased Oculus for US$2 billion, and in March 2017 it was announced Oculus founder and creator Palmer Luckey was leaving Facebook.

On August 22, 2020, Facebook confirmed that as of October 2020, all Oculus devices being used for the first time will require a Facebook login, with existing Oculus users being given two years to merge their Facebook and legacy Oculus accounts before support for legacy accounts ends in January 2023; if the legacy account is not migrated before then, the headset will lose functionality. This directly contradicts a promise made by Oculus founder Palmer Luckey made in 2016, on Facebook's direction, that people would not need a Facebook account to use the Oculus Rift.[1]
