OpenGL is a 3D graphics library. Video cards from ATI and nVidia accelerate OpenGL by drawing the graphics.

Its competitor, DirectX, is only available at Microsoft platforms. OpenGL is dominant on Mac OS X and Unix and also available for Windows.
