Paine (パイン, Pain?) is a fictional character from the Square-Enix role-playing video game Final Fantasy X-2. She is a new addition to the returning cast of Final Fantasy X. She is a member of the treasure hunting team, Gullwings.
Paine's default costume bears resemblances to rock stylings and is somewhat Gothic, and also bears similarities to the outfit worn by Final Fantasy VIII's hero, Squall Leonhart. Paine's costume design and personality also have similarities to Lulu.
As part of one of Final Fantasy X-2's side-quests, the player can collect from around the world of Spira Key Items called "Crimson Spheres". These spheres document Paine's experiences as a warrior-fighter for the Crimson Squad, which was intended to be an elite unit to surpass the Crusaders, with the best members being assigned to lead Crusader chapters across Spira. These spheres reveal that Paine had been the recorder for a group of candidates named Nooj, Baralai, and Gippal, the game's present day leaders of the Youth League, New Yevon, and the Machine Faction, respectively.
Most of the Crimson Squad candidates died during the group's final field exercise, which took place in a cave beneath Mushroom Rock Road called "the Den of Woe". This followed as a result of the pyreflies within the cave overwhelming them with the despair of the unsent named "Shuyin", causing them to turn on one another. Only Nooj, Baralai, Gippal and Paine escaped alive, but later, Nooj — possessed by Shuyin himself — fired on his friends, effectively ending their friendship for two years. Just before Yuna joined the group, Paine enlisted in the Gullwings in the hopes of finding out more about why the Crimson Squad had been massacred — and because she had long desired to fly in an airship.
Paine also refers to being among the people who sang the Hymn of the Fayth at the end of Final Fantasy X, partially explaining her actions in between the Crimson Squad and Gullwings.
During the course of the game, if the player locates all ten Crimson Spheres, the Den of Woe can be unlocked, allowing Yuna, Rikku and Paine to face the truth of Paine's past for themselves. Shuyin's despair nearly overcomes the group, as it had the Crimson Squad in the past, until Yuna is able to free her friends from its influence. Thereafter, armed with the truth, Paine promises to help her friends — both old and new — and save the world from Shuyin before he can destroy it.
Other Appearances[]
- Paine appears in Kingdom Hearts II as a chibi fairy-like version of herself along side similar versions of Yuna and Rikku. The three are treasure fanatics working for Maleficent, who offered them a lot of treasure. Paine stopped Rikku's speech to tell Sora and his fellow partners who was their leader, that would be Maleficent herself. Paine's services, much like the others, eventually goes to the Hollow Bastion Restoration Committee after Maleficent abandons the three during the Heartless raid and Donald falsely promises that Leon would pay the trio for their help. Paine and others did forgive Sora and his partners for the deception by giving Sora the keychain of the Gullwing Keyblade.
- In this game, Paine's outfit/dressphere was similar to X-2, the main change is two tiny black wings shaped like a tiny dragon's.
- Paine is a playable character in Itadaki Street Special in chibi form with Yuna and Rikku.
