Gameplay follows in similar footsteps of previous Paper Mario games. Turn-based combat returns, however, cards that are able to be painted by the player are used for attacks, similar to the stickers in Paper Mario: Sticker Star. "Thing" cards are making a return.
Mario and his friends have arrived on Prism Island. The nearby areas have been drained of color, and, using the help of his paint bucket sidekick, Mario embarks on an adventure to restore color to the barren world.
