Perfect Dark is a first-person shooter video game for the Nintendo 64. Developed by Rare and released in 2000, Perfect Dark is seen by many as a spiritual successor to Goldeneye. Set in the future, Perfect Dark features futuristic science-fiction weapons and technology. The game stars Joanna Dark, an agent for the Carrington Institute, a research and technology facility that develops weapons and gadgets for military and non-military use. Rival DataDyne HQ is a similar company, but with strong government connections, and seedier practices. The game begins with conflict between Carrington and Datadyne but gradually grows to a global and then galactic scale.

After some time in limbo, a prequel titled Perfect Dark Zero was finally produced by Rare for the Xbox 360, after Nintendo sold its' interest in the developer to Microsoft.

Expansion Pak[]

In an unusual feature, although the Expansion Pak is required to play the single-player game and most multi-player options, it is not required and limited multi-player functionality is available without the Expansion Pak. According to the manual, approximately 35% of the game is available to players without the Expansion Pak, although this number reflects features rather than content.
