A fan-made concept.

The PlayStation 4 (previously codenamed Orbis) is an eighth video game console developed by Sony. It was officially unveiled on February 20, 2013 (6pm, EST) at a media and investor event, available to viewers via livestream.

The PlayStation 4 is Sony's fourth home console. It is expected to be released by Christmas 2013 in Japan and North America, and for Europe and Australia New Zealand.

The most speculation and rumored changes are to the controllers. Though they will be similar in size and shape to the DualShock controller, it will also feature a touchpad, sharing capability, and allow multiple users to log in to their accounts at once. Blu-Ray is still the expected disc format, with updated graphics, USB ports, and a large hard drive.

It is also possible that the new system will be able to interact somehow with mobile devices, though it is uncertain whether the devices have to be Sony products or not.[1]

Features

Confirmed and rumored specs:[2][3]

  • System Memory: Unified 8GB DDR5 RAM
  • Video Memory: 2.2 GB
  • CPU: x86-64 AMD "Jaguar" 8 cores
  • GPU: 1.84 TFLOPS, AMD next-generation "Radeon" based graphics engine
  • Ports: Super-Speed USB (USB 3.0) AUX, Communication Ethernet (10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T), IEEE 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 (EDR)
  • Drive: 6x CAV Blue-ray BD-ROM, 8x CAV DVD
  • HDD: 2.5 inch SATA HDD 160GB (expected to be larger)
  • Audio Output: HDMI &, Digital Output (Optical), Analog AV-out
  • Operating system: Gaikai cloud service

Gaikai, a cloud-based service (akin to on-demand gaming), allows for streaming of PC and console games. This enables players to also play demos of games and applications from any internet device.

Hardware

Eye Toy

The Eye Toy will gain a much-needed upgrade, sporting a dual camera. This change enables the Eye to be used much in the same way as the Xbox's Kinect.[4]

PS4Camera
  • Video frame rate:
    • 1280x800 - 60fps
    • 640x400 - 120 fps
    • 320x192 - 240 fps
  • RAW, YUV (uncompressed)
  • Video pixel: (maximum) 1280x800pixelx2
  • 85° field of view
  • Dual lenses, Fvalue/F2.0fixed focus
  • 4 channel microphone array
Blu-ray optical disc drive

It is unknown if the Blu-Ray optical disc drive is a front-loading drive on the PS4. Backwards compatibility has yet to be confirmed, but it is expected to also support CD-ROMs, CDR+W, DVD, DVD-ROMs, DVD+R, DVD-R, and SACDs.

The Controller

The PS4 is expected to ship with a redesigned controller, though still similar in size to the DualShock. The Select, Start, and PS buttons will be replaced with a touchpad. Sharing technology is built into the controller, allowing the taking of screenshots and video that can be shared online.[5]

In addition, it will come with vibration and motion sense technology (including tilt correction). Supposedly user accounts will be linked to each individual controller, meaning that multiple accounts can be logged in at once. Players will be prompted to log in each time a new controller is connected.[6]

Features list:

  • USB (Micro 8)
  • Extension port
  • Stereo headset jack
  • Dimensions: 162mm x 52 mm x 98 mm
  • 2 point touch pad, click mechanism, capacitive type
  • Six-axis motion sensing system (three axis gyroscope, three axis accelerometer)
  • Light bar, vibration, built-in mono speaker
  • Buttons: PS, share, options, directional, action, R1/L1/R2/L2/R3/L3, right and left stick, touch pad button
  • Built-in lithium-ion rechargeable battery
Backwards Compatibility

President of Sony's Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida has stated the PlayStation 4 will not be backwards compatible with either retail or digitally downloaded games unless future development allows for emulation on the platform.

Pricing

There is no confirmation yet, but gaming site Gematsu [7] translated a Japanese newspaper that expected the price to be over 40,000 yen. This is roughly $428 US.

Packages

To be announced.
