Pocket Monsters: Red (stylized on the intro screen as Pocket Monsters: Red Version) was released alongside Pocket Monsters: Green in Japan in 1996. Pocket Monsters: Red and Pocket Monsters: Green were basically the same, except for different creatures exclusive to each game to encourage trading. Both Pocket Monsters: Red and Pocket Monsters: Green were succeeded in Japan by Pocket Monsters: Blue, which was used as the basis for Pokémon Red Version and Pokémon Blue Version released internationally.
