In gaming, a Shield, outside of the science-fiction term normally referred to as Shields, is a form of defensive armor, usually equipped in the off-hand slot in video games. Having a Shield equipped can often enable unique moves and gameplay mechanics not available otherwise. The Shield itself will often help mitigate damage taken by the player, but may also negatively impact the amount of damage the player is able to inflict.
