Super Mario Kart is the first installment in the Mario Kart series. It was released in Japan on August 27, 1992, in [[North America on September 1, 1992, and in Europe on January 21, 1993. Selling eight million copies world wide, Super Mario Kart became the third best selling SNES game. The game was re-released in 2009 on the Virtual Console for the Wii.
In this game, the player can take control of one of eight characters from the Mario series, each with different speeds and weight classes. In single player mode, the player races against seven computer operated racers, all with the aim to come in first. During the races, the players and the computers can run over item panels to get an item that gives them a power boost, or hinder another racers lead. There's also the option to race against the clock in Time Trial mode. In the multiplayer mode, two players can race against each other and the computers in the cup races, or can go against each other in a one-on-one race. The final multiplayer mode, the two players go against each other in a head-to-head battle, where they try to eliminate the other by destroying the balloons which serve as the player's "life".
