Hey God Hand Fans
Just want some help on the God Hand Wiki.-Gobi-Aoi 19:38, November 17, 2010 (UTC)

Spotlights and Cross-wiki footers
I have created a set of cross-wiki footers with spotlights(featured wikis), seen here or here on my test wiki. The purpose is to replace the dated cross-wiki footers(that only promote already popular wikis, like the Wiki psuedo-hubs do) and bring more editors to the gaming hub to contribute to articles related to the gaming wikis they frequent.

The footers reside on the central wiki, and the spotlight decisions would be handled on the gaming hub by local admins, much like it is with the Amine/Manga footer & spotlights

I'm not sure about the links on the left side, Forum, Answers, and all IRC links on the hub are bad.

So you are saying that these Gaming Footers are being updated and that they should be replaced? Conker&#39;s Bad Fur Day 22:42, September 23, 2011 (UTC)

:Those gaming footers were just made on my test wiki and would be transferred to the central wiki to replace this one and others. when they are on the central wiki they can be used on all wikis, and anyone can update them, except for the spotlight part which would be decided here on the gaming hub.--Sxerks 23:02, September 23, 2011 (UTC)

See also recent discussion (less than 1 month old) on w:Template_talk:Wiki_Gaming_Footer. -Afker All hail AliceSoft! 08:25, September 24, 2011 (UTC)

:I've seen this discussion, and it is partiality the reason for the new design(the original concept is very old, I just never had the time to put it together). The old design tries to restrict wikis to ones with a certain # of pages or users, this one uses all of them and spotlights the one that "want to be spotlit". The wikis currently listed on the new footer are directly from the "star listings" on the Portal pages on the hub. The height of the footer can be increased if the listing is too compacted with the scroll bar.--Sxerks 19:12, September 24, 2011 (UTC)

::My feedback in the prior discussion mainly involves two points:

::* I want individual wikis to be able to do their own custom prioritized promotion of related wikis (or not, if they choose not to), independent of whatever the template is centrally highlighting/spotlighting.

::* I want the total number of wikis in the footer to be restricted (about 10 outside the highlight/spotlight list) so it doesn't become an over-crowded link fest that most people will just mentally block out.

::I believe my feedback for that prior discussion still applies to the design showcased on the test wikis. As for height, if anything, I'd want the footer height to be shorter. If it looks ugly and crammed with scrolling, then I think that's indicative that you are trying to put too much into a cross-wiki promotional footer. -Afker All hail AliceSoft! 05:01, September 25, 2011 (UTC)

:::For your fist point, anyone can make a cross-wiki footer, and because my version is modular other more personalized footers can be based off of it, such as replacing the "all" sub page with a smaller listing. Having multiple footers for different genres does separate "related wiki", the current version being used on central has completely unrelated wikis.

:::In between updated the Amine/Manga footer I created the Dndfooter which is very specific and even linked to the "Tabletop Portal" on the Hub instead of just the Hub. If the new footers are used, I will may use the old and the new.

:::If you personally want to restrict the number of wikis list you can. Though, if it is 10 or 100 it is already "mentally blocked out", it is mainly just a list for people to look through.

:::The test footer is shorter than the current one, and since they reside at the bottom of the main page their height is not important. My point about the height is not that it is ugly or cramped, it just may be easier to scroll though the listing.

:::The Purpose of a cross-wiki footer is cross-wiki promotion, bringing traffic to your wiki and in exchange pointing out others. Bringing people to the Hub to edit articles to help point to their wiki(see heading below), and applying for spotlights, which is really what most people are going to see when they glance at the footer(because of the wordmarks).--Sxerks 17:01, September 25, 2011 (UTC)

Main Page and Portals
The main page and portal pages are out of date and have excess/unused info on them, and can be trimmed down.

The main page logo is redundant(with the wordmark), featured media is unnecessary, featured wiki would be replaced by the cross-wiki footers(see above), new & notable could be replaced by wikis with upcoming games or DLC during that specific Quarter.

On the portal pages, all of the links in the "star list" should link to a local article, which will then link to the actual wiki or wikis. See the Thief test page for an example. Similar to the lists on the main page of the Amine/Manga Hub.

Some wikis need to be on the portal can I please put them on per discussion. The wiki does really need a Main Page revamp plus a new logo. This one is getting old :p. File:Wiki-background also needs changing. Per discussion. Conker&#39;s Bad Fur Day 22:17, September 23, 2011 (UTC)

Speaking of portal pages, I noticed that whenever someone edits a section using the visual editor, it messes up the formatting. Obviously, this requires a major re-write of the page style just to fix it. --Sigma 7 04:53, September 29, 2011 (UTC)

Articles
Some articles are unnecessary on the hub, such as Character pages or any other that would have a larger article on a specific Wiki. Example: Garrett vs Thief Wiki: Garrett and :Category:Pokémon. Note on the Thief test page the inter-wiki links for characters and items.

The main game articles should really be short and to the point, and not just full copies of wikipedia articles. They should also direct users to a specific wiki to find more info, that's what a hub does. I have made some alteration to the main infobox and an article to show what I mean. This is similar to the format on the Amine/Manga Hub.

:I am strongly opposed to mass deleting any article (except possibly on the grounds of being a Wikipedia import), as at least two of the wikis merged into this one (Codex Gamicus and Gameinfo) are general-gaming encyclopedias and I believe that can still be true for Wiki Gaming. - Adan Aileron (talk) 15:59, September 27, 2011 (UTC)

: While some character pages are okay, I would recommend either migrating them to the individual wiki, or placing it in a subpage for the game in question (e.g. Garrett could be redirected to a characters page under the Thief Guide). If they're a major character for a game series or franchise, then it's okay to keep them as is, but creating a page for each character might be a little excessive (for example, Fallout has a metric ton of characters, a lot of which can be quite detailed when you include the multiple games they're referenced in.) --Sigma 7 04:51, September 29, 2011 (UTC)

::I would note that Garrett is a main protagonist of a significant series. I would also note that Sxerks has a conflict of interest with regard to this topic. As for character pages in general, it's probably better to handle it on a case-by-case basis. As for Fallout's "metric ton" of characters, if someone starts writing articles, what's the problem? - Adan Aileron (talk) 15:48, October 6, 2011 (UTC)

:: I'd like to put my two cents on the situation. This is a general gaming Wiki, we are supposed to have as much information about video games as possible. This includes locations, bosses, enemies, characters, NPCs, items, vehicles, weapons, etc. I don't see what is wrong with character pages - this IS a gaming wiki -- characters are IN video games. And what you said about Fallout -- we don't even have pages for all he MARIO characters, yet we still keep them, don't we? Besides, most of the information get is from ANOTHER WIKIA. Why would you combined it with the same information on this wiki, when it the end, it's just the same, although slightly modified. It would be like telling the Mario Kart Wiki to combined with the Super Mario Wiki. Two different subjects. The Fallout wiki is for Fallout -- this wiki is for generalized information. <span style="border:2px outset yellow;background-color:green;-moz-border-radius:1px"><span style="color:yellow;">Z</span><span style="color:yellow">mario</span></span> 10:29, November 21, 2011 (UTC)

PCs/Macs aren't even listed as hardware platforms. Lame. --&nbsp;Fandyllic<small> (talk &middot; contr)</small> 12 Apr 2013 9:55 PM Pacific

:Interesting point. Come to think of it, I think Arcades should also be listed as a hardware platform. Jagged85 (talk) 14:45, April 13, 2014 (UTC)

:I was thinking the same thing Fandy. PC is a huge, HUGE category when it comes to gaming (probably the most diverse). The thing is, we would have to rearrange that section to incorporate it either expanding the two rows to have 5 platform, or make an entire third row of "misc (arcade, pc, mobile, etc)". <span style="border:2px outset red;background-color:black;-moz-border-radius:1px"><span style="color:red;">Z</span><span style="color:red">mario</span></span> 14:53, April 13, 2014 (UTC)

::I can't think of any reason why those three shouldn't be added. I'll update it today. <b>Raylan13</b><helper /> (<font size="1">talk</font>) 18:07, April 14, 2014 (UTC)

:::PC and Mac should ideally be avoided, especially since they are practically no different in terms of architecture now; Mac should only be used for games that were capable of playing on pre-Mac OS X versions. I propose that we have the following listed as platforms; Microsoft Windows, Mac (legacy use only), Mac OS X, and Linux. If we want mobile to be adequately covered, we should ideally have Windows Mobile, BlackberryOS, iOS and Android. Consoles should, of course, continue to use their individual names.--TwoTailedFox (My Talk Page) 18:25, April 14, 2014 (UTC)

Are we talking about two different things, because I'm talking about the front page. On there we have the most recent platforms offered by Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. Above and beyond that, games are then typically sorted into PC, Mac, iOS, and Android most frequently. Arcade is just a nifty other category to include. I rarely see Linux-only in my Kickstarter travels, though I have seen the occasional Ouya. I can't remember ever having seen anything specifically for Windows Mobile or Blackberry that would warrant inclusion on the main page. ==Hacking==

I have removed two images of ceiling fans from the article Dave & Buster's. The user who uploaded them reverted me, claiming that they don't depict ceiling fans. Since on my side they clearly do, it seems to me that the only way this could be possible is that somebody has hacked Wiki to serve different images depending on the user's IP address; could somebody look into the problem?

Now seriously: User:Daveandbusters is a sockpuppet of an abusive user on Wikipedia, whose modus operandi is to register an account, often matching a name of a location, upload a picture of a ceiling fan, and add it to an article about the location. - Mike Rosoft (talk) 08:54, November 1, 2014 (UTC)
