Overview[ | ]
Tekken 5 is a third and the last Tekken game for PlayStation 2. The game was praised for taking the series back to roots, which includes tight combos fast gameplay, smooth grapichs and over 30 characters. New characters were 5 playable and one unplayable: Raven, Asuka Kazama, Feng Wei, Roger Jr. and for the first time Devil Jin. The final boss of the main game, Jinpachi Mishima is the one unplayable and cannot be unlocked by any normal game methods. Asuka Kazama is basically with Jun Kazama's moves, who appeared in Tekken 2 and Tekken Tag Tournament, so she isn't necessarily a new character in terms of moves. Combot from Tekken 4 was thrown away and Mokujin was took back again. Also many characters who were in Tekken 2, but were missing in Tekken 3 have returned as unlockable characters. Stages are now with or without walls. If a stage has walls, it has no pillars what-so-ever like in Tekken 4. Just a flat floor and walls where to rub the opponent in. One noticeable thing is when striking to the wall, the opponent falls faster before player can string in different attacks. This is called Wall Splat. For the first time ever it is possible to customise characters with different equipments and colours that have no effect in battle. But players need fight money to customise their characters with cool accessories. Fight money, or simply G, can be earned by winning matches in single player modes. The more the player plays, the more money he/she will eventually gain. Also the game introduces for the first time a ranking system, pretty similar to Virtua Fighter 4. All characters can be ranked from the Beginner to the maximum Tekken Lord rank. The ranking system also affects to computer's playing style; While 5th Kyu Pauls might be a piece of cake, Legend Pauls takes more work to take them down. The game includes Arcade versions of Tekken 1, 2 and 3(and StarBlade) to celebrate Tekken's 10-year anniversary. Tekken Force was removed and Devil Within was replaced. In it, the player controls Jin Kazama through a 3D-action-adventure. The mode resembles a lot of Tekken Force, hence that Jin needs to beat a lot of enemies in order to move on.
The grapichs of the game are sometimes referred as the best that's been on PlayStation 2 hardware. The game supports 60 Hz, but no Progressive Scan, like in Tekken 4.
Devil Within[ | ]
Devil Within is a mini-game in Tekken 5, replacing Tekken Force that has been present in Tekken 3 and Tekken 4. In it the player controls Jin Kazama through 5 stages while fighting enemies in groups and solving puzzles. In the end Jin must defeat the boss of the stage to complete the stage. If the Devil Gene meter is full, Jin can transform into Devil Jin for a period of time. Not only this consumes the Devil Gene meter, but also Jin's health. Devil Jin is a lot more powerful and can destroy with laser from distance and around him, so it is better think for the use of Devil Jin, especially on harder difficulties.
Arcade History[ | ]
Arcade versions of Tekken 1, 2 and 3 are included in this game. These give you an access to arcade's settings. They don't really have any loading times.
