The Getaway

The Getaway is a video game series focused on gang life and the police in the city of London. The series was created by Brendan McNamara and is developed by Team Soho for the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable. Its initial release was The Getaway which came out on December 11, 2002.

The Getaway installments[]

There are so far two Installments with one spin-off title and a proposed 3rd main series title exclusively for the PlayStation 3 console.

The Getaway[]

Main article: The Getaway

The Getaway is the first game in The Getaway series. It was released for the PlayStation 2 in 2002/2003. The game is set in London. The story is said to have been inspired by British gangland films Get Carter and Snatch.

The Getaway: Black Monday[]

The Getaway: Black Monday is the second game in the series and was again developed for the PlayStation 2 in 2004/2005. The games story is based on such movies as Get Carter, The Long Good Friday; lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. It is a follow-up to The Getaway.

Gangs of London[]

Main article: Gangs of London

Gangs of London is the latest game in the series which released for the PlayStation Portable in 2006/2007. The game, being a spin-off, had no link, story wise with the other Getaway games and had different game play features. It focused on several gangs around London.

The Getaway 3[]

The Getaway 3 (also referred to just The Getaway) is to be the third game in the series. In June 2008, it was reported as cancelled but in October 2009, Team SOHO announced "It" and Eight Days were just on hold due to the development of Eye Pet. The game will again be set in London although other cities are thought to be included.

The Getaway received favourable reviews praising the cut scenes, graphics, sound and story, with the only slight drawbacks of the gameplay itself and the fact of not having much to do after completing the missions.[1][2][3]

The Getaway: Black Monday[]

The Getaway: Black Monday received average reviews applauding the graphics, sound and story. Again the gameplay was criticised. Only being worse this time.[4][5][6]

Gangs of London[]

Gangs of London received mainly negative reviews, whilst praising the graphics. Sound, voice acting and gameplay were harshly criticised, the worst being the voice acting, describing it as being on the verges of pantomime.[7][8][9]

The Getaway is said to be a "GTA Clone" due to the similarities with the Rockstar game Grand Theft Auto.
