Torchlight II is an action role-playing game developed by Runic Games, due for release in spring 2011.[1] It is the sequel to Runic's 2009 RPG, Torchlight, and features peer-to-peer multiplayer[2] support and extended modding capabilities.
Gameplay[ | ]
Much like the original Torchlight, Torchlight II will feature randomly-generated dungeons for the player to explore, and numerous types of monsters to fight for experience and loot. The game will feature four character classes,[2] of which two have been announced: the Railman is a melee fighter whose combat abilities use an alternate resource system;[3] and the Outlander, a class that uses ranged weapons and "low magic."[2] Unlike the first game, players will be able to customize character appearance with choice of gender, face, and hair style.[2] Additionally, several elements from the first game will be returning, such as pets, fishing, and a retirement system.[1]
Plot[ | ]
The game will take players beyond the town of Torchlight, across the continent of Vilderan.[1] Syl, a warrior from the first game, appears to the player character in a dream, beckoning him or her to the Estherian Steppes. The plot will focus on how the characters from the original Torchlight have been affected by their previous quest for riches. The player will work together with guardians from Estheria to uncover a plot that threatens the world.[1]
Development[ | ]
Though the original Torchlight received positive reviews, the game's lack of any multiplayer modes was a near-universal criticism of the title by critics and fans alike.[4] Torchlight II was conceived not only as a way to give the series multiplayer support, but also to give Runic "more experience with making a multiplayer Torchlight".[4] Some of the work on Torchlight II is intended to carry over to Runic Games' upcoming Torchlight MMORPG.[3]
