Uncharted is a series of action-adventure third-person shooter games released by Naughty Dog for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. The games follow treasure hunter Nathan Drake as he explores various historical mysteries, often coming into conflict with dangerous enemies along the way.

Development[ | ]

Setting[ | ]

Uncharted is heavily inspired by action treasure hunter films such as Indiana Jones. As such, each games delves into the ruins of long-lost civilizations and legendary cities. While the first game is set almost entirely on an uncharted island off the coast of South America, the following games in the main series have the player travel across the globe.

The main protagonist is a treasure hunter named Nathan Drake, who claims to be the descendant of Sir Francis Drake, the British explorer famous for being the first man to circumnavigate the globe. In each game, Nathan takes part in investigating historical mysteries, such as legendary artifacts or cities. Along the way, he comes into conflict with dangerous enemies hunting for the same thing, forcing him to race against them and their armies. Drake is often accompanied by allies along his journey, including Victor "Sully" Sullivan, Elena Fisher, and Chloe Frazer.

Gameplay[ | ]

The core gameplay mechanics of Uncharted games can be broken into three categories: combat, platforming, and puzzle-solving. The main playable character is treasure hunter Nathan "Nate" Drake.

Combat[ | ]

Gun fighting is the primarily means of combat across each title (melee combat is featured, but it varies too much across each title to be properly described in a series article). The player carries two firearms at a time: one sidearm, and one primary weapon (such as a rifle or shotgun): different weapons and ammunition can be gathered from downed enemies.

Rather than a health bar, Uncharted uses the screen's color to indicate the player's current condition: the graphics will progressively fade to grey as the player loses health. The player will automatically regain health when they do not receive damage for a set period of time, at which point the graphics will return to normal. According to Naughty Dog, the health bar is not a measure of Drake's physical condition, but his luck: the damage he receives are, in fact, "near misses", and a single shot is enough to kill him.[1] If the player dies, they will respawn at a specific checkpoint.

In most scenarios, stealth combat is an option.
