The main story focuses on the escalating tensions between the Horde and the Alliance after the defeat of the Legion and returning from Argus. Sylvanas launches a full scale attack on Darkshore, which ultimately leads to the destruction of Darnassus and the burning of the World Tree. The Alliance, unable to save the Night Elf capital, retreat and formulate a plan to attack Lordaeron. As the Alliance begins their assault, plague spreaders halt their advance until more allies, Alleria Windrunner and Jaina Proudmoore arrive and help the weakened Alliance army. Jaina is able to dispel the plague, allowing the Alliance to successfully infiltrate Lordaeron. As the battle rages on, the Alliance encounter Saurfang, which after a fierce battle, results in the captivity of the orc. Saurfang is spared his life, and is instead taken to the Stormwind Stockade. Afterwards, Anduin and his allies confront Sylvanas in her throne room. After a tension-filled exchange, Sylvanas unleashes her banshee powers, causing what's left of Lordaeron to start collapsing. Jaina is able to teleport the King and allies to the airship, which Anduin spots the Horde warship moving in the opposite direction. Anduin returns to Stormwind to plan his next course of action.
Sylvanas, after knowing of Saurfang's capture, organizes a infiltration team to free him from the Stockades. Meanwhile, the princess of the Zandalar empire has been captured as well. In exchange for helping them, the princess demands the horde return to Zandalar with them to meet her father, the King.
