x86 is shorthand for Intel's family of processors (that would later be cloned by other companies, most notably AMD and Cyrix) starting with the Intel 8086, although in practice, x86 in terms of software tends to only reference as far back as the Intel 80386 due to the introduction of 32-bit applications. x86 has been superseded by x86-64.
