The Zapotecs or Binniza live in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. They formed one of the oldest and most resilient Mesoamerican civilisations. The most notable Zapotec centre, Monte Alban, was built on a razed mountain top. Benito Juarez, Mexico's first indigenous president, was a Zapotec.
